Engine Control System Upgrade – MV Scot Mariner
Problem:
Following the successful control system upgrade on the MV Scot Bay, Scotline commissioned Royston to deliver a similar modernisation project for the MV Scot Mariner. Like its sister vessel, the Scot Mariner was operating with an ageing Wärtsilä WECS 2000 engine control system. Over time, these legacy systems become increasingly vulnerable to environmental stresses—such as heat and vibration—while the availability of replacement parts diminishes. This posed a significant risk of unplanned downtime, increased maintenance costs, and potential compliance challenges.
Solution:
Building on lessons from the Scot Bay project, Royston again partnered with ComAp, a global leader in smart control systems, to coordinate a comprehensive upgrade programme to replace the obsolete engine control system with a modern, more resilient solution. The retrofit included:
• A new Main Control Panel (MCP) featuring the ComAp InteliDrive DCU Marine controller, InteliVision 8” marine HMI, and integrated safety modules.
• An Extension Control Panel (ECP) installed near the engine to expand I/O capabilities.
• Upgraded push-button controls, warning indicators, and redundant safety features to meet IACS marine standards.
Result:
The successful upgrade on the MV Scot Mariner has delivered a future-proof control solution that enhances system reliability, improves operator interface, and integrates seamlessly with the vessel’s AMS and CPP systems. With remote diagnostics and global support now available via the ComAp system, Intrada’s technical team can respond more quickly to issues, reducing potential downtime.
“This is the second control system upgrade we have worked on with Royston and ComAp, and once again they have delivered a well-managed, technically sound solution. Their teams handled the planning and execution with professionalism and kept everything moving, even when challenges cropped up. The upgrade has made a real difference to the operation of the vessel.”
— Scotline’s Representative
Having already completed a similar project on the Scot Bay, the Scot Mariner marks another successful step in Scotline’s ongoing programme to modernise its fleet. The upgraded control system has improved reliability, reduced the risk of future downtime, and provided the crew with a more intuitive interface for day-to-day operations. By drawing on the experience of all parties involved, the project was delivered efficiently and with minimal disruption to the vessel’s schedule.
